Your Personal Finances in Singapore

“The key to making money in stocks is not to get scared out of them.” ~ Peter Lynch

“Diversify your investments.” ~ John Templeton

Realize that we must be aware of the risks involved in investing our money in financial markets and must be willing to accept them in order to invest in the markets. We should never trade with money that we cannot afford to lose and and we must accept that there will be losses, and one must be able to sustain these losses, both from a financial as well as an emotional perspective. I believe it’s all about taking actions and learning through experiences in order to succeed.

To your success in investments in 2012 and beyond.

Wise Tips on Life

Dear friend

My professional goal is to help you to gain or add to your financial independence, regardless of what your ultimate ambitions are. In my opinion, having money gives you some freedom and independence from the vagaries of life or regulations of government. Having money doesn’t necessarily make you happier or improve your quality of life. That’s up to you, the people you love, the books you read, the places you visit, the music you dance to, and the wine you drink.

You have a choice. You can

resign yourself to the

ridiculously low yields of

checking and savings

accounts.

Or you can take a small,

reasonable amount of risk and

go for a potential for a TOTAL return

of 5% per year — all with a

reasonably conservative

investment.

That’s almost five times better than

today’s savings accounts.

This is achievable in the long-term if

you do a proper asset allocation and

invest in the financial markets and

re-balance your portfolio along the way.

When was the last time you

earned a 5% increase on your salary in a

single year?

Do you generate  consistently earn

at least 5% p.a. on your investments?

Just imagine the profound,

positive impact that kind of

return could have on your

life if you manage your money well!

Instead of living in fear/worry that

your finances could collapse

like a house of cards … you

can rest easy knowing you’re

set for life no matter what

happens in Singapore or in the world.

Instead of just “making ends

meet,” you can make exciting

plans for the vacation you’ve

always dreamed of. You can buy

that retirement home or retire overseas.

And you can finally treat yourself

and the ones you love to the

luxuries you never thought you

could have.

Realize that all of this is

only possible with planning and saving wisely.

The choice is yours. Choose wisely.

Call me at 8168 7459 to help you plan and save up for the lifestyle that you aspire to, especially your retirement.

Realize that most of us may only have the next 25 years or so to achieve our retirement goals.

“Claire is my insurance agent and financial consultant. I’ve used other Insurance companies over the years, but have always just said things like, “I use this company, or that company”, until now, I haven’t ever tied an agent’s name to my insurance policies.

Claire took the time, in the evenings, to sit down with me and go over ALL details of each policies and loans which I have. No other agent has ever sat down with me to actually explain what I was getting for my money or the benefits of having them. I just paid my premiums, and HOPED my insurances was “good enough”.

Claire also helped me with my financial understanding – on which loans to settle first and why? She also helped me with plans on how to achieve my goals. If Claire hadn’t been so through in her explanations, I probably would have just stayed with the little knowledge that I had on my policies and financial situations.

I give credit to her for being caring, understanding and easy to talk to. I believe if more people had an agent like her, insurance and financial understandings wouldn’t be that hard to understand.

Thank you Claire! You’ve made me feel comfortable and easy to understand.” ~ Mdm G. Nambiar

Dear reader

I want to share with you the following story.

I found out today that a friend was recently diagnosed with cancer of the brain. He is in his late 40s and he’d spent most of his adult life being the sole care-giver of his mother. He did freelance work every now and then. But most of the time, he was a full-time care-giver. His mother was wheel-chair bound and she needed someone to take care of her daily needs. Even though he had several  domestic helpers, they couldn’t help him much either.

As a filial son, he made the sacrifice and had forgo the freedom that most of us take for granted. The freedom to live your life on your own terms and to chase your dreams. How will your parents’ aging affect your plans? Seriously, in the event of such a scenario, what will you do? Do you have siblings that will share the costs and obligations of taking care of your parents? Seriously, think about this.   How prepared are you and your siblings?

After his mother passed away earlier this year, he found that he kept having dizzy spells and all the medicine won’t make the dizzy spells go away. After a series of medical tests such as MRI and finally, after extracting the spinal fluid, the doctor diagnosed that it’s the advanced stage of brain cancer which had affected his spine as well. The doctor said he might have only 2 years’ left.

3 months into the chemotherapy and radiotherapy, his total medical bills add up to $50,000 already and he needs to continue to seek medical treatment. Thankfully, his brother is willing to take care of him and help him pay for the medical bills.

Sadly this man didn’t get insurance when he was younger. The sad thing is when he did apply for medical insurance this year, it was a month before he was diagnosed with cancer. So his application is invalid as his cancer is a pre-existing condition.

So my friends, please get insured while you’re young and healthy. The premiums are affordable. The longer you postpone getting insurance, the MORE premiums you’ll pay for the entire policy.

Plus you’ll be taking chances, so the HIGHER risk that you may not be able to get insured b’cos none of us can guarantee our health. We’ll only incur medical problems as we age. Even young people can have high cholesterol levels or high blood pressure.

This real-life case is to remind us that life is uncertain. Insurance is the only tool in the financial market that help us prepare and manage the financial risk against major unforeseen events such as death, TPD and Critical illness.

e.g. For dread disease, you’ll need CASH to seek medical treatments that can easily escalate to hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you’ve insurance, the cash is already there to help you tide over this period financially so that you’ve the peace of mind to recover quickly.
